The Story

Avon was able to invest in philanthropic projects, such as helping women find jobs and fighting domestic violence.

Avon is a publisher of mostly romance novels. It also releases fiction on occasion. HarperCollins owns Harlequin and Avon. Avon was owned until the mid-90s by the Hearst Corporation. It is now a part of Newscorp.

Newscorp's acquisition in 1999 of Hearst Publishing resulted in the decision to focus exclusively on romance and leave out the other genres. In the decade of 2000, Avon has specialized in historical romance and has been called "the house that history built." Authors like Lisa Kleypas, Connie Mason, Stephanie Laurens, Julia Quinn and Beverly Jenkins have published their work through the company.

Avon has been transforming into digital publishing in recent years. Alongside its catalogs on the internet and magazines, it also has a digital magazine called AVON Style and an app that allows users to buy its books while on the move. Avon also published digest sized paperbacks such as Modern Short Story Monthly or Avon Fantasy Reader. This series is still in high demand even today. They were often accompanied by tie-ins with movies. Avon also published non-romance hardcovers in paperbacks however, these were later transferred by Hearst Corporation to Morrow's other publisher following Hearst bought Avon in the year 1959.

This book is an excellent illustration of the author's ability to create a backstory for Avon. He also emulates the bantering dialogue style that Blake's 7 became famous for. If you're not a Blake's 7 fan it's not for you. The book is centered around the relationship between Avon, Vila and their mutual respect and disdain for their cowardice and ruthlessness.

The characters have plenty of depth, and each one has a unique personality that makes them believable. This is a story that will leave you wanting more. The writing is flawless and there is an authentic feeling for the world in which it is set. It's an absolute masterpiece written by an author at the top of her game.

The Setting

Alongside a wide collection of women's fiction Avon also has a strong line of crime and thrillers, Avon Booklet as well as a growing list of children's literature. The most popular authors such as CL Taylor, Katerina Diamond and many other authors are published by Avon.

Avon's commitment to bringing the best of commercial fiction to the widest possible audience is still in place today. Avon books are innovative, diverse and include some of the brightest writers of the present. The company has also a proud tradition of publishing historical fiction, particularly in the realm of historical love. Often referred to as the house that created the historical romance, Avon is still the preferred publisher for writers like Tessa Dare and Lisa Kleypas.

The Author

Avon Books, the division of HarperCollins that publishes romance novels, started as a paperback book publisher in 1941. They hired sister and brother writers to form a group of writers called "Love's Leading Ladies" which included Kathleen Woodiwiss, Rosemary Rogers and others. The first Avons were similar to the pocket books and were a subject of a lawsuit by Pocket Books, but they were successful due to their focus on the mass market.

In the 1950's, Avon was selling millions of books each year. Their colorful covers and mass-market appeal meant that they were able to sell the type of pulp fiction the mainstream publishing houses were hesitant to publish. They were so successful, in actual that the Hearst Corporation bought them in 1959.

The Hearst Corporation changed the direction of Avon's publications by adding more literary works to their collection. Avon also began releasing digest-format paperbacks, such as Murder Mystery Monthly and Modern Short Story Monthly. Some of these are highly sought-after in the present due to their high-end quality and their rarity.

The sexually explicit novel The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss, published in 1972, marked a shift in the direction of Avon. They would publish a number of additional sexy romance novels like 1974's The Wolf and the Dove and later Rosemary Rogers' Sweet Savage Love. These new releases made earlier Avon romances more romantic with their purple-prosed love scenes seem tame.

Avon became a leading force in romance and developed the bodice-ripper. In the 1970s, they had multiple romance books earn spots on bestseller lists.
